about

Written for Why Aren't You Famous? Podcast Season Two Episode 3. Featuring guest songwriter, Don Duprie, who lives in River Rouge, MI and is a working firefighter and comes from generations of working class people living in Michigan. The topic we chose to write about was the working class and I decided to approach it as a thank you note to the worker's who assembled my Honda Fit, which saved me a painful demise during a violent car wreck in 2013. My current car was assembled in Hamamatsu, Japan, which was bombed by the US, six times in 1945 and now assembles cars for our auto market. I was also contemplating an image by my "Small Stories" collaborator, Bonnie J. Schupp, which shows a needle and thread.

lyrics

A moving part, interlocked
Breaking glass and a ticking clock
A universe grinding at its gears

I trace it back to understand
A simple truth, a worker’s hands
Cradled me in chaos and saved me from the dark
I cannot say I know you, but I love your beating heart.

A golden thread, sewn through time
Made our lives so intertwined
Stardust melted into steel

In ‘45, we dropped our bombs
And now it seems, we get along
Who am I to break that wheel?

It takes so long to find the proof
To wind it back to a simple truth
I don’t know what I’m looking for
I know that it doesn’t matter anymore

I trace it back to understand
A simple truth, a worker’s hands
Cradled me in chaos and saved me from the dark
I cannot say I know you, but I love your beating heart.

A tiny spark in a machine
Helps me glide straight towards a dream
See the world before it disappears
